Ok...this is as basic as she gets...
PLAYER A attacks PLAYER B with a Gray Ogre (red - 2/2).
PLAYER B decides to block the Gray Ogre with a Scryb Sprite (green - 1/1 - flying).
The Gray Ogre is a 2/2 - while the Scryb Sprite is a 1/1. Under normal circumstances, the sprite would take lethal damage and head to the graveyard but PLAYER B decides to play a Giant Growth on his Scryb Sprites (Instant - target creature gets +3/+3).
The Giant Growth does not automatically happen. It goes onto the STACK.
NOW, PLAYER A has a chance to respond. PLAYER A targets the Scyb Sprite with a Lightning Bolt (Instant - Deals 3 damage).
The Lightning Bolt goes onto stack.
PLAYER B now has a chance to respond to the Lightning Bolt, but he has no response.
So now the STACK looks like this:
2.LIGHTNING BOLT 1.GIANT GROWTH
Sooooo....Now what happens?
REMEMBER THIS: LAST IN, FIRST OUT.
The Lightning Bolt was the last spell put onto the STACK, so it resolves first. The Scryb Sprites take 3 damage and get that ass scorched...DEAD.
The Giant Growth resolves and then fizzles because there isnt a creature there to target.
..........this is how it works. If you get confused while you are playing you can write every spell down in the order that it was cast so you can sort out the stack accurately.
